Ingredient Highlights

Licorice Root
Worldwide, Licorice root is one of the most widely used medicinal herbs, and it is the single most used herb in modern Chinese medicine. Used by the Egyptians as a flavoring for a drink called Mai-sus, large quantities of Licorice Root were found in the tomb of King Tut. In the Middle Ages it was taken to alleviate the negative effects of highly spicy or overcooked food.

Hundreds of potentially healing substances have been identified in Licorice Root, including compounds called flavonoids and various plant estrogens (phytoestrogens). The herb's key therapeutic compound, glycyrrhizin (which is 50 times sweeter than sugar) exerts numerous beneficial effects on the body, making licorice a valuable herb for treating a host of ailments. It seems to prevent the breakdown of adrenal hormones such as cortisol (the body's primary stress-fighting adrenal hormone), making these hormones more available to the body.

Licorice Root has a well-documented reputation for healing ulcers. It can lower stomach acid levels, relieve heartburn and indigestion, and acts as a mild laxative. It can also be used for irritation, inflammation, and spasm in the digestive tract. Through its beneficial action on the liver, it increases bile flow and lowers cholesterol levels.

Burdock Root
Burdock has been an important medicinal herb in Western folk medicine and in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years, valued primarily for its blood cleansing and skin healing properties. Burdock is known to balance internal heat, is specifically helpful for supporting skin health, and is associated with the lung and stomach meridians. It is considered energetically cold and has a slippery consistency that soothes mucus membranes.

Burdock is a good source of non-starch polysaccharides like inulin, glucoside-lappin, and mucilage that help it act as a laxative. Additionally, inulin acts as prebiotic to help reduce blood-sugar levels, body-weight, and cholesterol levels in the blood. Burdock has been used in many folk remedies as one of the best blood purifiers. It contains certain diuretic principles, which help expel toxic products from the blood through urine.

Burdock Root contains small quantities of many vitamins fundamental for optimum health, including folic acid, riboflavin, pyridoxine, niacin, Vitamin E, and Vitamin C. Furthermore, it also contains valuable minerals such as iron, manganese, magnesium, zinc, calcium, selenium, and phosphorus.

Ginger Root
Ginger Root (Zingiber officinale) is well known as a remedy for travel sickness, nausea, and indigestion. It is widely used for wind, colic, irritable bowel, loss of appetite, chills, colds, flu, poor circulation, menstrual cramps, dyspepsia (bloating, heartburn, flatulence), indigestion, and gastrointestinal problems such as gas and stomach cramps. Ginger Root is a powerful anti-inflammatory, and there has been much recent interest in its use for joint problems. It has also been indicated for arthritis, fevers, headaches, toothaches, coughs, bronchitis, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, to ease tendonitis, lower cholesterol and blood-pressure, and to aid in preventing internal blood clots.

Chamomile Flowers
Chamomile Tea has been used for centuries as a relaxing sleep aid, a treatment for fevers and colds, for relief of stomach ailments, and as an anti-inflammatory. Recent and on-going research has identified Chamomile's specific anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, muscle relaxant, antispasmodic, anti-allergenic, and sedative properties. This attention appears to have increased the popularity of the herb and nowadays Chamomile is included as a drug in the pharmacopoeia of 26 countries.

Senna
Senna is a popular herbal laxative that is generally safe and well tolerated. The active components in Senna extracts are anthraquinone derivatives and their glucosides, referred to as senna glycosides or sennosides. They appear to act as a local irritant on the colon, which promotes peristalsis and evacuation. Senna may also enhance intestinal fluid accumulation and increase the moisture content of stool by inhibiting electrolyte and water reabsorption from the colon. Senna is used in many over-the-counter laxatives.

Red Clover
Red clover is considered to be one of the richest sources of isoflavones, which are water-soluble chemicals that act like estrogens (known collectively as phytoestrogens). Red Clover is useful for hot flashes/flushes, PMS, breast enhancement, and breast health as well as lowering cholesterol, improving urine production, improving circulation of the blood, helping to prevent osteoporosis, reducing the possibility of blood clots and arterial plaques, and limiting the development of benign prostate hyperplasia. Red clover is also a source of many valuable nutrients including calcium, chromium, magnesium, niacin, phosphorus, potassium, thiamine, and Vitamin C.

Eleuthero Root
Eleuthero Root, more commonly known as Siberian Ginseng, is best known as an adaptogen and has been used in Chinese medicine for thousands of years. In Chinese medicine, Eleuthero Root is used to invigorate qi (chi or energy), strengthen and nourish the spleen and kidneys, and to balance vital energy. It is considered energetically warming, and relates to the spleen, kidney and heart meridians.

Lemon Peel
Lemon Peel contains about 5 to 10 times more vitamins than lemon juice, and is an excellent source of fiber, potassium, magnesium, calcium, folate, and beta carotene. Because it contains high amounts of Vitamin C and calcium, Lemon Peel has been shown to aid in the prevention of osteoporosis, inflammatory polyarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis. Lemon Peel also contains citrus bioflavonoids, which are very powerful at reducing oxidative stress levels. This portion of the lemon also aids in removing toxic and carcinogenic elements in the body.

Alfalfa Leaf
Alfalfa is well known as a feed plant for livestock, yet it also has a rich tradition of use as a healing herb. In traditional folk medicine, it has been administered as a nutritive tonic and was found to be particularly useful in cases of malnutrition or during convalescence. Dried alfalfa leaf is widely available in herbal shops and health food stores as an herbal tea, tablet, powder, or made into a liquid chlorophyll supplement. The seeds are often sprouted and eaten in salads and sandwiches.

In traditional medicine of Europe and the U.S., Alfalfa has been used to stimulate appetite, support urinary and bowel function, and as a diuretic. Due to Alfalfa's nutrient density, it has been utilized for providing easy to assimilate nutrients during convalescence. It is recommended for use as a tonic after blood loss or in cases of insufficient levels of iron in the blood. Alfalfa is an alkalizing plant that has complex and seemingly opposite flavors of bitter and sweet, and therefore both stimulates and regulates stomach secretion. Alfalfa aids in healthy digestion due to its fiber content, which gives this herb a slightly laxative effect, and it also supports the structure of the intestinal walls.

Passionflower
Passionflower was used traditionally in the Americas, and later in Europe, as a calming herb for anxiety, insomnia, seizures, and hysteria. It is still used today to treat anxiety and insomnia. Scientists believe Passionflower works by increasing levels of a chemical called gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain. GABA lowers the activity of some brain cells, making you feel more relaxed.

Clove
The health benefits of cloves are so great that the spice is used around the world, including extensively in Chinese medicine. This incredible spice has an ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) value of over 290,000. It also has more manganese than almost any other food. Manganese is an important trace mineral for the body because it activates multiple enzymes, particularly anginas which help in the formation of urea. Manganese also forms the enzyme peptides which are responsible for the hydrolosis of proteins in the intestines. This mineral helps with lipid metabolism (getting rid of fat) and keeping the nervous system stable (reducing irritability).

Matcha Green Tea
Matcha, the oldest and most premium variety of green tea in Japan, is known as the mother of all green tea. It has been used as a meditational drink by Zen Buddhist monks for over 800 years, and is extremely high in antioxidants, amino acids, and other nutrients. Typically, Matcha is the only tea variety that is ground into fine powder form, and when drinking Matcha or enjoying a food or beverage made from Matcha, you consume the entire tea leaf. Matcha drinkers receive the full nutrition of the whole tea leaf, and will enjoy the high concentration of green tea antioxidants, amino acids, vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Matcha contains high antioxidants compared to fruits and vegetables, and ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) test results prove that one gram of Ceremonial Matcha Green Tea contains 1384 ORAC units. When compared to other antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables, as well as other leading superfoods, traditional Ceremonial Matcha Green Tea clearly stands out above the rest.
